Age and Height

Sanjay Dutt was born on 29th July 1959 and is 59 years old as of 2018. The veteran actor stands 6 feet tall.

Marriage/Relationships

In 1987, Sanjay Dutt married actress Richa Sharma who died of a brain tumour in the year 1996. After that, Sanjay married air hostess turned model Rhea Pillai in 1998. They got divorced in 2008 and Sanjay then married Manyata in 2008 after dating her for two years.

Family

Sanjay Dutt was born to late Sunil Dutt, a cinema actor, and late Nargis Dutt. He is the brother of Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt. He has a daughter named Trishala with his first wife, Richa Sharma. In 2010, Sanjay and Manyata became the parents of twins, a boy named Shahraan and a girl named Iqra.

Career 

Sanjay started his acting career with a box-office super hit movie named Rocky in 1981. Sanjay Dutt’s second film in 1982, Vidhaata became the highest grossing Hindi film of that year. Sanjay Dutt’s role in Naam in 1986 was a huge commercial as well as a critical success and is believed to be the turning point in his career. Throughout the ‘80s, Dutt appeared in many successful movies like Inaam Dus Hazaar, Mardon Wali Baat (1988), and Kanoon Apna Apna (1989). 

Throughout the ‘90s also, Sanjay Dutt kept the trend of working in successful films alive. His films Sadak, Saajan, and Khalnayak were defined as some of the era-defining Indian films. Saajan was the highest grossing Hindi film of 1991 and got him nominated for the Filmfare Best Actor Award.

After being arrested in 1993, Dutt made a comeback with Daud in 1997 which failed to be a box office hit. But the year 1999 is termed as the actual comeback of Sanjay Dutt with five films - Kartoos, followed by Khoobsurat, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Daag: The Fire and Vaastav: The Reality and all these were among the highest grossing Hindi movies of that year. These roles won him many awards and his first Filmfare Best Actor Award.

Sanjay Dutt kept on playing lead roles in Hindi films like Jodi No.1, Pitah, Kaante and Munnabhai M.B.B.S which was the National Award winning film of 2003. The sequel of Munnabhai M.B.B.S was released in 2006 named Lage Raho Munnabhai was also a big success and earned him many awards. He earned an award from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his role in the Munnabhai Series. Sanjay Dutt starred in movies like Dhamaal, Shootout at Lokhandwala, All the Best, Double Dhamaal, Son of Sardaar, Agneepath and PK which were also box-office hits. Dutt has been an integral part of the industry for around four decades, and it still seems like there is no stopping him.

Controversies

The superstar was arrested for possession of illegal drugs in 1982 and was imprisoned for five months. During the 1993 Mumbai Serial Blasts, he was arrested under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act(TADA) for possession of illegal arms. He was released on bail in October 1995 but was again arrested in December 1995. He was again released on bail in April 1997.

Charges against him related to the Mumbai Serial Blasts were cleared in the TADA court in July 2007. But he was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment for possession of illegal weapons. 

On March 2013, the Supreme Court of India upheld the verdict of the TADA court and reduced his sentence from 6 years of imprisonment to 5 years of imprisonment.

Favourites

Sanjay Dutt’s favourite food is Tandoori chicken. He loves watching movies of Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna. Nargis and Sharmila Tagore. His favourite singers are Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. A Stone for Danny Fisher by Harold Robbins is his most favourite book.

Awards

Sanjay Dutt was nominated for 8 Filmfare Awards for various roles. He won the Filmfare Best Actor Award, the Star Screen Best Actor award and also the International Indian Film Academy Best Actor Award for Vaastav: The Reality in 2000. He also won the Filmfare Best Comedian Award for Munnabhai M.B.B.S in 2004. Hs role in Mission Kashmir won him the Star Screen award and the Zee Cine Award for the Best Supporting role. He won 3 Stardust awards on different categories for his roles in Munnabhai M.B.B.S, Lage Raho Munnabhai and Agneepath. His performances in different films for around four decades earned him loads of awards. These are just some of the most popular awards he has won.

Trivia

Dutt changed the spelling of his first name from Sunjay to Sanjay after his drug rehabilitation because he wanted to start a new life with a new name. Sanjay Dutt revealed during an interview that he did not weep on his mother’s death although she was very close to him. He also revealed that his father shared an audio record of Nargis and only after playing the audio he wept for almost four to five hours.

Sanjay Dutt plays the guitar very well and has also won a Gold medal for winning a competition in the U.S.A.
