Ekta was born on 7th June 1975 in Mumbai and is 43 years of age. The producer/director stands 5 feet 34 inch tall.
Ekta Kapoor has been at the helm of her game for some years now, maintaining her position among the top-notch players in the television world. However, she has always been discreet about indulging in relationships in a highly volatile world of showbiz. Nonetheless, she has been linked up with director Karan Johar and Taimur Bajwa, a Punjabi lawyer on a few occasions. Ekta denies any such relationship.
Ekta Kapoor was born to yesteryear stars Jeetendra and Shobha Kapoor. Her younger brother Tushar Kapoor is also a renowned Bollywood actor. She did her schooling from Bombay Scottish School, Mahim and graduated from Mithibhai College.
Hailing from a predominantly thespian family, Ekta was destined to make her mark in the television industry. Ekta started her career at an early age of seventeen. Jeetendra advised her to try producing serials. She co-established Balaji Telefilms with Shobha Kapoor, her mother when she was only 19 years old. After a few failed attempts, she successfully created the serial Hum Paanch. Ekta played a significant role in reviving the Indian television and gradually her soap operas became inseparable of every Indian household.
Her serials were aired on leading entertainment channels such as Zee TV, Star Plus, and Sony Entertainment Television. Her serials include hits like ‘Koshish Ek Ashaa’, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani, Kaahin Kissii Roz, Kutumb, Kasamh Se, Kabhii Sautan Kabhii Sahelii, Parichay—Nayee Zindagi Kay Sapno Ka, Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil, Kitani Mohabbat Hai, Bandini, Kkusum and Kahiin to Hoga Kasautii Zindagii Kay, which projected the commonplace family relationships, emotions, romance, traditional values held so dear by the majority of Indian middle-class population. Most of Ekta’s serials are immensely received by the audience earning her the sobriquet of Content Czarina.
She had forayed into Bollywood in 2001 and started producing films like Kyun Kii … Main Jhuth Nahi Bolta, Kuchh to Hain (2003), Krishna Cottage (2004) etc. The films like Shootout at Lokhandwala starring Sanjay Dutt and Vivek Oberoi and her brother Tusshar Kapoor along with Sanjay Gupta; Mission Istanbul EMI – Liya Hain to Chukana Parega starring Suneil Shetty, and Love Sex Aur Dhoka, Shor in the City, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, and Ragini MMS did very good at the box office. Her film, The Dirty Picture, became a contentious issue in the Indian cinema and yet gained wide critical acclaim which proves of Ekta’s deft insight of the tastes of the cine-goers and binge-watchers alike. She has also launched 40 web TV series online through her digital app ALTBalaji. Her productions have been the launchpad for many popular television stars of the day.
Besides production, Ekta does script writing, creative conversion and concept building. She has been chosen as one of 50 of ‘Asia’s Most Powerful Communicators’ by Asia Week magazine in 2001.
Kapoor has also received numerous prestigious awards as the producer of Balaji Telefilms. These include the Indian Telly Awards, Indian Television Academy Awards, Kalakar Awards, BIG Star Entertainment Awards, Asian Television Awards, Stardust Awards etc.
Jodha Akbar is Ekta's first show which incurred the wrath of the Rajput Kshatriya Akhil Bharatiya Chatariya Sabha who protested stating that the serial is projecting factual inaccuracies about a matrimonial alliance being forged between Jodha and Akbar to save the kingdom of Jodha’s father. Some other communities demanded the immediate suspension of the show and claimed that Jodha never existed. The issue reached the crescendo of outrage as it had hurt the sentiments of some communities so much so that Ekta’s effigy was burnt.
Ekta, an avid reader, covets The Last Song Of Dusk by Siddharth Dhawan Sanghi and Paulo Coelho’s Magnus opus Alchemist among her collection. She also tunes into old ghazals in her pastime.
One can spot that ‘K’ recurs as the signature alphabet in naming movies under Ekta’s banner.
