Intro: India’s answer to Martin Scorsese, Anurag Kashyap stands tall as one of the most innovative and suave directors working in the industry today.
Age and Height
Born on 10 September 1972 in Gorakhpur, UP, Anurag Kashyap recently turned 46 years old. The director stands 5 feet 11 inches tall.
Anurag Kashyap was married to film editor Aarti Bajaj for 6 years, from 2003-2009, and also has a daughter Aaliya with her. After a divorce in 2009, he immediately began dating actress Kalki Koechlin whom he met in 2009 during Dev D, and also married her. In 2013 the couple announced they have decided to separate. Currently, Kashyap is dating Shubhra Shetty who also happens to be his associate at (now dissolved) Phantom Films.
Anurag was born as Anurag Singh Kashyap to Shri Prakash Kashyap, a retired chief engineer in UPPCL. He has two siblings, sister Anubhuti and brother Abhinav.
After arriving in Mumbai in 1993, Kashyap had to wait for 5 years and many failed attempts for a break. In 1998, he got a chance to write script for the classic Satya, thus paving the path for Kashyap as a writer. Paanch was supposed to mark his debut as a director, but the film was first delayed by CBFC and then by the producer. Meanwhile, Kashyap continued writing scripts and dialogues for reputed filmmakers. In 2007 Kashyap made Black Friday, which immediately ran into trouble as the Mumbai bomb blast case was still ongoing. It was released in 2009 and introduced Kashyap as the leader of the new generation of genius directors.
Over the next couple of years, Anurag Kashyap directed a string of critically acclaimed moves like No Smoking and Gulaal. However, two movies defined his career. First was the 2009 film Dev D, the modern take at the classic tale of Devdas, that became a surprise hit and made Kashyap the name on the lips of every movie-loving youth in India. Then, in 2011, came Gangs of Wasseypur, which is now a legendary classic. After a few flops like Raman Raghav 2.0 and Bombay Velvet, Kashyap returned in 2018 with two major projects: the acclaimed sports drama Mukkabaaz and the superhit web series Sacred Games.
Anurag Kashyap is known to have tussles with the CBFC. His debut film Paanch never saw the light of the day, and his second film Black Friday released after much hassle. His 2016 film Udta Punjab brought him in direct confrontation with CBFC and Punjab government, and the matter was resolved only in court. Recently, his show Sacred Games on Netflix again came into controversy due to derogatory remarks against ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi. Even without these issues, CBFC has often objected to the abundance of sex, drugs and abuses in his movies. In 2018, he dissolved his production house Phantom due to sexual harassment allegations on partner Vikas Bahl.
Kashyap wanted to become a scientist and almost became one, but diverted his mind towards movies during college.
