2020 was probably the worst year for a lot of us. The pandemic shook us our foundation, bounding us to the safety of our homes for most part of the year. However, this brought about an opportunity - an opportunity to stream the movies and TV shows we love. And that's what everyone did. Netflix has come up with its report for 2020 where it reveals what the subscribers have been watching in India. Let's have a look.
Films of 2020
Netflix announced that India has the "highest viewing of films on Netflix globally" and as many as 80 percent of Netflix India subscribers actually sit down to watch a movie every week.
In the thriller genre, Raat Akeli Hai, Extraction, Malang, and The Old Guard became the most watched ones. Furthermore, Ludo also made it to the list as the most watched comedy film. Others in the top 10 list were Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (Telugu), Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal (Tamil), Kappela (Malayalam), and Uma Maheswara Ugra Roopasya (Telugu).
Jamtara: Sabka Number Aayega became the Indian title to feature the longest on the Top 10 row in India!
"In 2020, the viewing for romantic stories on Netflix in India increased by roughly 250 percent, compared to 2019," Netflix told us. Most of this romance viewing, which saw us rekindle our love stuck at home, were movies including Love Aaj Kal, Ginny Weds Sunny, and Mismatched.
Female power was quite evident in Netflix India's 2020 watching list with movies like Guilty, Masaba Masaba, Bulbbul, She, Miss India, and Never Have I Ever and Emily in Paris making it to the list.
While India loves its Bollywood and regional movies, subscribers also showed a lot of love for international movies and shows. While Spanish series Money Heist was part of the top 10 list in India for 170 days, German series Dark was part of the list for 95 days in a row.
Other than that, The Protector (Turkish) was also a hit among Indian audiences. In the anime category, Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back-Evolution, Blood of Zeus and One-Punch Man Season 2 were the most watched in 2020.
K-Dramas for the win
Much like the global trend, Korean dramas were a hit with the Indian audience as well. Viewing for K-dramas on Netflix in India increased more than 370 percent in 2020 over 2019.
Even kids content viewing increased 100 percent year or year as well. Some of the tiles that made it to the top include Over The Moon, The Willoughbys, Boss Baby: Back in Business Season 4, Feel the Beat, Mighty Little Bheem Season 3.
