Karan Johar's Dharma Productions is currently working on its next big film project - Takht - a period-drama film based in the Mughal era. Announced last year, shooting for Takht is expected to begin early next year with a star cast that includes Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Anil Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor, and Bhumi Pednekar. While recent reports had suggested that Dharma Productions had shelved Takht after the failure of Kalank at the box office, there seem to be certain sources revealing that the project is very much active and will go on floors in 2019.
Touted to be the desi version of HBO drama Game of Thrones, Karan Johar's Takht was described as the filmmaker to be the “epic battle for the majestic Mughal throne”. Takht is expected to go on floors next February with a 'start-to-finish schedule'.
Focusing on sets and locations right now, the team behind Takht is expected to work on visual sets alongside character shoots to ensure that the movie gets read on time. This information was revealed to Mumbai Mirror by a source close to the development.
Considering this is such a big project for the production company, Karan Johar is reportedly looking to host acting workshops for the lead cast to ensure that everyone is on board with diction and body language coaches hired to get the nuances right.
Set in the Mughal era, Takht will be a story of two warring brothers expected to be inspired by the real-life feud of Mughal ruler Shah Jahan's son Aurangzeb and Dara Shukoh. Ranveer Singh is reported to play the role of Aurangzeb, while Vicky Kaushal might be cast as Dara Shukoh.
Additionally, Kareena Kapoor Khan has been cast as Jahanara Begum, their sister, while Anil Kapoor will be her husband. The characters of all other actors seem to be unknown yet, however will likely be revealed as shooting begins for the upcoming Bollywood period-drama.
