Japanese cinema is known across the world for popularising the concept of animation in feature films. Japan has made some superhit anime franchises like DragonBall Z, Attack on Titan, and Pokemon, which have been running successfully for decades. However, most Japanese movies don't make it to commercial cinema halls in India. For this, Japan Foundation has partnered with PVR Cinemas to announce the launch of the third annual Japanese Film Festival 2019 in India to promote Japanese entertainment in the country.

The six-month long film festival will be launched in the capital on 27th September 2019 at PVR Select Citywalk, Saket, New Delhi.  The Japanese Film Festival’s line-up features a list of critically acclaimed and globally popular Japanese films. It will showcase films from various genres like romance, drama, and comedy from contemporary Japanese cinema, including feature, award-winning, and anime films.

One of the highlights of the Japanese Film Festival 2019 is Weathering With You, an Oscar-nominated film from Japan. Director Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You is due to release in Indian cinemas on October 11, and will have its gala India Premiere at the Japanese Film Festival 2019-20. Shinkai will also be attending the premiere in Delhi-NCR.

The Japanese Film Festival 2019 will also host several popular titles like Dance with Me, Lu over the Wall, Shoplifters, Your Name, Perfect World, Bento Harassment, Children of the sea, Kingdom, My Dad is a Heel Wrestler! Tokyo Ghoul, and The Fable among others. A handpicked selection of 25 films with English subtitles will be screened during the festival across select PVR Cinemas in India.

“I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the Japan Foundation and all the people, both in India and Japan, who made holding of this excellent event possible this year. From the films which the Japan Foundation has brought to you this year, you will discover what Japanese people laugh at, what they are moved by, and what they like, etc. I hope that, through these interesting stories, you will feel closer to Japan and Japanese people. I am sure this film festival will help further consolidate the friendship between the people of our two countries," said His Excellency Mr. Kenji Hiramatsu, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Japan Embassy.
